Audra McDonald is one of the most highly regarded performers on the Broadway stage. She recently won her fifth Tony Award® for her perfomance as Bess in The Gershwins' Porgy & Bess. Her other theatrical credits include Carousel, Ragtime, Master Class, A Raisin in the Sun, Marie Christine, Henry IV, 110 in the Shade and Twelfth Night. An opera singer with a luminous soprano, McDonald has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Los Angeles Opera. As a Juilliard graduate, she joins Michael Kahn in a discussion of her classical and musical roles and how their challenges intersect.





Christopher Plummer

Christopher Plummer has benefited from a illustrious career spanning over half a century. Classical titled roles include Cyrano, Barrymore and King Lear, two of which garnered him Tony Award® wins. He most recently graced the stage as Prospero in The Tempest and starred in his own one man show A Word or Two. Plummer's film career includes such memorable titles as The Sound of Music, Inside Man, The Last Station and his Academy Award-winning performance in Beginners. Christopher Plummer and Michael Kahn will discuss how he fostered the longevity of his career on stage and screen.

IN REPERTORY WITH CORIOLANUS

STC is proud to announce a newly commissioned adaptation and translation of Friedrich Schiller’s Wallenstein by former poet laureate Robert Pinsky. Wallenstein, one of Germany’s greatest dramatic works, follows the famous general Albrecht von Wallenstein at the height of his influence and power during the Thirty Years’ War. Leading Europe’s most powerful army, Wallenstein is caught between his ambition and his Emperor’s growing distrust. He must decide either to stay loyal to his king and lose his power or to betray his country for greater gain. STC Artistic Director Michael Kahn, called “one of the best directors in America” (DC Theatre Scene), envisions this epic story of war, intrigue and loyalty tested.

Wallenstein was commissioned through the generous support of The Beech Street Foundation.

A celebration in the art of storytelling, the STC presents The Winter’s Tale, one of Shakespeare’s late romances. Traveling through time, visiting the austere court at Sicilia and the bright sea shore of Bohemia, two generations transcend torment and obsession. The Winter’s Tale is a compassionate and dazzling saga that tells the tale of King Leontes, who is overcome with jealousy when he believes his pregnant wife Hermione and his good friend King Polixenes are lovers. Director Rebecca Bayla Taichman, whose Cymbeline was ““brimming with both heart and good humor” (Washington City Paper) and whose Twelfth Night was “gorgeously romantic… as a brand new as a first kiss” (The Downtowner) returns to direct this classic piece through imagination and wit.

A mighty hero, Caius Martius, earns the new name of “Coriolanus” for his triumphs. However his inflexible self-belief and contempt for popular rule cause him to be condemned as a traitor and sent into exile. Desiring revenge against the Romans who banished him, he befriends his blood enemy, Aufidius, to launch an assault on his beloved city. Rome, in its terror, pleads with Coriolanus to end his crusade for vengeance. Celebrate director David Muse who has “distinguished himself as a skillful director of contemporary plays” (The Washington Post) blurs the lines between hero and traitor in this politically driven tragedy.

As one of the most critically acclaimed productions ever on the Off-Broadway scene, "Celebrity Autobiography" is an evening of both comedic excellences and outrageous subject matter. This stand-up type show takes material from popular memoirs written by celebrities and puts it in the hands of comedians from the likes of Saturday Night Live and the Broadway stages. From Suzanne Somers to Justin Bieber, no one is off limits. For one night only, STC will host this 2009 Drama Desk Award winner with a first-rate cast including Mario Cantone (Sex and the City), Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live) and Lainie Kazan (My Big Fat Greek Wedding).

Haunting and violent, intimate and heartbreaking, MIES JULIE lays bare questions of what restitution and freedom can really mean and what losses can and cannot ever be recovered.

In Chekov’s brilliant tale of humor and despair, a pair of hunters talk late into the night sharing stories: one of an anti-social man and his involvement with an aggressively extroverted woman. The second, a tale of moral ambiguity in which the protagonist forgoes his love for a married woman. Drawing from surveillances footage, folk dance, and instructional hunting videos, MAN IN A CASE creates a bridge between our time and that of these 19th-century anti-love stories. Annie-B Parsons and Paul Lazar, the team behind the internationally acclaimed Big Dance Theater, bring their signature style to this world premiere adaptation.
